In our Layered Tribe youtube series, I am reviewing books about “blended families” and am kicking off the first book review series with the book “Blissfully Blended Bullsh*t" by Rebecca Eckler. If you can get past the language, this book is AMAZING! Rebecca takes a no-holds-barred look at life in a blended family. Eckler’s candor in navigating step-parenthood and juggling the emotional complexities of blending families resonated with me on multiple levels.

One of the book’s standout points is her raw honesty about the frustration, confusion, and guilt that can arise when merging families, expectations, and feelings. Instead of sugarcoating, she dives into real issues many feel but rarely discuss, making this book extremely relatable.

A second major takeaway is how Eckler underscores the importance of open communication. She articulates all of the little 'seemingly ridiculous' arguments, frustrations, and feelings that seem illogical to have, and I understand better why not only I have some of the emotions but also how these 'trivial, little disagreements' actually do build over time." By highlighting various arguments over the “little things” and how they accumulate, she emphasizes that how these small but potent conflicts are managed can make or break family harmony.

Finally, Eckler touches on the necessity of setting clear boundaries and finding balance. She talks about learning to love, respect, and adjust to each other’s routines and quirks—without sacrificing personal boundaries.

While sadly Rebecca and her layered tribe did not make it in the end, I found that by reading this book it helped me to put to words some of the abstract feelings I have experienced in our own home life situation making me feel validated and not alone in this journey. I also uncovered a few gems in tips that I shared that could potentially help others which are on our layered tribe website.
